TOBACCO BALER PRESS CYLINDER & BASIC COMPONENTS

Our tobacco baler cylinder has a special design that is specifically for use on tobacco balers. Our tobacco baler cylinder is a 4" bore honed all aluminum construction tube, with an 18" stroke, a 1" chrome piston rod with wrench flats, and the ports are standardized to valve port size. Designed in cooperation with the University of Kentucky's Agriculture Engineering Department.

Tobacco Baler History

In the late 70's the University of Kentucky's Agriculture Engineering Department started developing equipment to reduce the amount of labor required to harvest Burley tobacco. Three areas were selected for modernization: 1) harvesting, 2) stripping, and 3) packaging for market. The result was the development of a machine that cut the stalks and placed them on the sticks, a machine to automatically strip the leaves from the stalk, and baling the leaves for transport to the warehouse. Although the harvester and stripper enjoyed some success, the baler was widely accepted throughout the Burley growing areas.

The Engineering Department of Custom Cylinders International, Inc. was involved in the initial development of the tobacco baler, and eventually developed a special designed air cylinder for the application. Other pneumatic cylinder manufacturers provided cylinders that were often not suited for the severe environment of the tobacco processing operation. the new air cylinders design addressed these problems, and for 25 years it has been sold throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The success of the tobacco leaf baling process has started to become accepted in the flue cured tobacco leaf and canvas grown tobacco markets. Tobacco baler plans, baler air cylinders, pneumatic valves, frames, air hose, fittings, and associated equipment is available direct from Custom Cylinders International's factory. These items are also available through Southern States, Tractor Supply, and many independent farm supply stores. PART# 418* Tobacco baler Cylinder Pneumatic cylinder specifically designed for use on a tobacco baler.

PART# L240* Lever Valve 4 way, 2 position lever valve for controlling the direction of the tobacco baler press.

PART# TP248 Tobacco Baler Package cylinder, lever valve, piston rod nut, 5 piece fitting set, 6ft hose, speed control, 4 cylinder mounting bolts, hardware for mounting valve, "A" frame holds air cylinder and hangs from barn door track, Push frame, spring set, 2 hanger brackets
* = Items included in the TP248

PART# L241 Saftey Air Valve The 2nd air valve used for stopping the direction of the tobacco baler press.

PART# TP248M Same as the TP248 but comes with the additional safety valve.

PART# L242 Detented Lever Valve 4 way, 3 position lever valve for controlling the direction of the tobacco baler press. Has a neutral position.

PART# A01 Air Filter Air filter should be considered as a must, to keep your cylinder and valve free from dust and contamination. To extend the life of the cylinder and lever valve use an air filter and lubricator.

PART# H17* TP248 comes with 5 piece fitting set for the basic tobacco baler cylinder air system. Additional pieces will be required if optional accessories are installed in the system. Fittings are push lock type, no clamps needed.

PART# H15* Hydraulic, Pneumatic Hose 6 ft. length of hose is the minimum amount required to complete a basic tobacco baler cylinder air system. The air hose is specifically constructed to assemble to the fittings without any clamps.

PART# H11* Piston Rod Nut The piston rod nut fits the air cylinder rod, and is to be welded to the press Push Frame Part# J02. The push frame may be with or without the piston rod nut.

PART# J02* Cylinder Push Pad The tobacco baler cylinder push frame mounts on the end of the cylinder rod. And when moves down presses the tobacco. Provided with or without piston rod nut Part# H11.

PART# A02 Lubricator The Lubricator adds a very small amount of oil to the air that circulates through the valve and pneumatic cylinder. This keeps the seals lubricated, and when used with a filter it will considerably extend the life of the total tobacco baler cylinder air system.

PART# A10 Connector Connects the air filter to the lubricator.

PART# A03 Pressure Regulator and Gage The pressure regulator and gage allows you to control air pressure. They are to be installed between the compressor and first lever air valve (L240, L241, or L242). Used to easily control tobacco bale weight when used with a weight scale, by controlling the air pressure.

PART# J03* "A" Frame Springs The springs for the "A" frame come in a set of two, and attach to the "A" frame and hanger bracket that connects to the overhead barn door track.

PART# J04* Hanger Bracket The hanger bracket connects the "A" frame and spring set to the overhead track.

PART# J05 Box Hook Set Two box hooks in a set required per tobacco baler box. Holds "A" frame assembly in position during the tobacco press operation.

PART# J01* "A" Frame Frame which hangs from the overhead track, and holds the tobacco baler pneumatic cylinder in position.

PART# H16* Mounting Bolt Bolt used to mount air cylinder to "A" frame (J01).

PART# H18* Lever Valve Screw Assembly Mounting hardware for pneumatic lever valve.

PART# L01 Seal Kit Tobacco baler cylinder seal kit. Replacement seals for air cylinder.

PART# C01 Noise Muffler The noise muffler is installed in the exhaust ports of the tobacco baler lever valve. This eliminates the annoying loud air noise, when the tobacco baler air cylinder is actuated. Use two per cylinder if a speed control is not used. The speed control has a built in noise muffler.

PART# C02* Speed ControlThe speed control is installed in the lever air valve to control the speed the pneumatic cylinder moves in one direction. If the speed in both directions are to be controlled, two speed controls are required. The speed control has a built in noise muffler.
